Drones, GoPro, RFID, Oculus Rift, augmented reality, 360 cameras, 3-d laser scanners, GIS systems. There is no shortage of technological devices that can be followed in advertising design projects. Making generation machinery even more exciting for design corporations is the low barrier to avoid, for example, professional-grade drones charge only $650 and are consistent with integration with existing workflows and systems.
“It’s been incredibly difficult for my friend to master all the innovations,” says James Barrett, vice president and chief innovation officer at Turner Construction. “It’s undeniable to get excited about the freshness of these machines, but I feel like some of them are just a direct solution to a problem.” Turner adopts a stable technology adoption technique, directly establishing the machinery that provides the most favorable cost-benefit compatibility ratio.
Beyond 2013, Suffolk Construction formed a 12-user study and progression team to track emerging technologies. The group, led through Jason Seaburg, senior assignment manager, has a formal procedure for verifying new devices, adding fortnightly conference calls and verifying times.
“We paint on research that, honestly, is a decade in technology,” Seaburg says. “We are looking to foster a culture and mentality in which the possibility of beta is acceptable, check the bureaucracy of new technologies that are reaching the market position and where failure is acceptable. If an explicit tool doesn’t paint, that’s fine, let’s move the game directly to the next thing.”
To find out what technologies they paint for sellers and which emerging programs are promising, BD-C contacted several giant vendors. Here’s what they offer:
Manhattan Construction has seen huge benefits from 360 cameras. Mark Penbig Apple of Manhattan, executive vice president of the compabig apple’s Dallas office, says the generation has reduced the will for customer visits/team site on the DFW International Airport Modernization and Improvement Project for several years. It also helped the team perceive the existing conditions (there are very few drawings as they were built) and document the progress of the construction.
Every two weeks, the regimen walks around the site, the assignment manager uses a Nikon D7100, equipped with a fisheye lens for panoramic shots, to take four photographs of dozens of prefabricated places on site. Photographs from either location are assembled using THE PTGui software (www.ptgui.com) and connected to a virtual task cultural plan through Real Tour Vision (www.realexcursionvision.com), allowing either team to take a virtual high-definition tour of the facility.
“Let’s say there’s a head of the ducts,” Penbig says. “We can see the last photo of this area, scroll and approach that unique location, and collaborate with the designers and the guest, the most virtuous friend, to solve it.”
Technological devices such as drones, GoPros and tabscorridor make it undeniable to capture video in the field. The ccorridorenge for contractors is what to do with the facts: how to make the most of the productive file for long-term use or link it to paints of design information.
Suffolk and Turner are working with software developers to create culture machinery to help them take their video data. Suffolk plans a YouTube-flavored website that would allow its staff to temporarily download and retrieve task videos. The newest feature: a confusing search feature that would take the audience to an explicit point in a video based on keyword input. “It can be a three-hour allocation video, but you’d prefer to watch the root installation after 12 minutes,” explains seaburg. “This tool will take you to that precise place.”
Turner is an opescore with software engineers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to expand an automated security detection program that will analyze video streams to detect personnel who do not use defense equipment, such as helmets, vests, and goggles. “Our goal has been to leverage readily available technologies, such as video and photos, combined with complex analysis, to solve problems,” Barrett says.
No technological innovation has an easier influence on design projects than prefabrication, Barrett says. Construction teams are experiencing significant gains in the workforce, making plans and efficiency, and are acquiring new tactics to move offsite “wonderful thinking” to a factory-like environment. Prefabricated external walls, unarmed curtain walls, multiple test frames, bath pods, prefabricated walls and gear skates are now a common position in primary projects. Pop-up programs come with prefabricated bases and internal partitions.
“The smarcheck site is never a very single site, yet it’s a combination of design sites where contractors point points in an empty, regulated environment and then deliver them only when needed,” Barrett says.
Commercial marketing specialists are more sophisticated, Barrett says. He quotes Klover Contracting, founded in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, which recently announced a BIM-Cold-Roll-Forming-Machine paint for the manufacture of low-thickness metal structure points for a wide variety of programs: internal partitions, ceilings, and corporate floors. , wall panels, to name a few. Based on the approximate BIM genre of a given project, the Klover team can create a nearby structural design that incorporates door/window openings, structural requirements, duct openings, and panel failures. This record is then sent to the corporation’s cold forming machines, which “print” any of the components to precise specifications.

Suffolk deploys Autodesk’s BIM 360 Glue (BIM/VDC cloud-based coordination) and the company’s Autodesk’s 360 Field (cellular mapping management). Seaburg says one of the most favorable applications is the quality control inspection used by the BIM 360 Field app on iPad, combined with QR codes on site.
In the company’s $280 million, 620,000-square-foot Brigham Building for the Future project, recently in Boston, the team placed QR codes on the hoax door frames in the complex. During paint list inspections (and in all likelihood in tick list inspections), team members can open the 360 Field app and scan the QR code in a given room for a detailed, real-time list of paints to be performed and targeted disorders.
“From there, we may be able to reposition the state, upload comments, dispute it, mark it as finished, or upload an image,” says Tom Reid, Suffolk’s deputy director of assignment. “This allows us to paint in almaximum lists in real time”.
Turner has been reading RFID tracking for several years and has implemented RFID responses intermittently, explaining why success, Barrett says.
“We’re getting undeniable results, such as tracking staff when they enter and leave the site, and to see if they’re in their certifications,” he says. With newer solutions, such as Trimble’s CrewSight system, Barrett believes RFID is in a timely h8 position.
“Costs are down and it’s becoming less difficult to implement,” he says. “We’re looking to make it general for projects.”
