Twitter this morning discovered more than 180,000 accounts that were reducing and amplifying propaganda for China, Russia and Turkey today. A little over 32,000 of the accounts were basic propaganda creators, Twitter said. All content they shared and amplified has been removed.
In addition, China has used an additional 150,000 accounts to exaggerate content created through its main accounts.
China
China has created a new propaganda network on Twitter after a precedent was discovered for Hong Kong dissidents and they were deregistered in the summer of 2019. This new account includes the most virtuous friend 24,000 creators of basic content and 150,000 amplifiers.
“Total netpaintings have been concerned in a chain of manipulative and coordinated activities,” Twitter explains. “They tweeted a very important friend in Chinese and spread geopolitical narratives in favor of the Communist Party of China (PCCh), while publicizeing misleading narratives about political dynamics in Hong Kong.
However, according to Twitter, the company’s apple faced this effort very early and “set out to think about throwing.”
Russia
Twitter has suspended 1,152 accounts applicable to Current Policy, a state-subsidized media organization in Russia that broadcasts state propaganda. The accounts promoted the United Russia party, which holds the country’s legislative seats.
“The activities included promoting United Russia and attacking political dissidents,” Twitter said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is from United Russia.
Turkey
The youth wing of Turkey’s ruling AK Party was probably an effort that included 7340 accounts that tweeted the help of current Turkish President Erdogan and the AK Party, Twitter said. In addition, the Turkish propaganda army on Twitter included hacked accounts of organizations that had criticized Erdogan.
The youth wing needed money, too.
“The wider network has also been used for advertising activities, such as cryptocurrency-like spam,” Twitter explains.
What Twitter did
Twitter removed all 32,242 accounts from major propaganda projects and included them in public archives. It is not yet very well known what the apple is doing for the 150,000 amp beads used to retwite and like messages from the Chinese robot army.
Twitter has shared knowledge of these activities with “two main study partners: the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) and the Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO)” and plans to hold a net conference this summer, collaboration opportunities with experts, induscheck out and governments.
Let’s hope that governments that have lately been on the site to spread propaganda will never be very similar.
