A golden monkey is born at a World Heritage Site in China

GUIYANG, March 29 (Xinhua) — A rare snub-nosed monkey from Guizhou named “Xiao Fan” gave birth to a calf on March 21 in southwest China’s Mount Fanjingshan region, the administration of the Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve said Friday.

The baby monkey is healthy. In the past eight years, “Xiao Fan” has managed to give birth to four healthy babies, according to the reserve’s administration.

The rare Guizhou snub-nosed monkey, or Guizhou golden monkey, located exclusively on the expanse of Mount Fanjingshan, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, has high-level coverage in China and is listed as a “critically endangered” species by the International Union. for the Conservation of Nature.

According to Yang Wei, director of the Guizhou Nature Reserve’s Snub-nosed Monkey Research Center, the monkeys’ breeding period has been shortened from three to two years at the center, making it possible to conduct clinical studies with the monkeys.

Of the three species of golden snub-nosed monkeys endemic to China, the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey has the smallest population, the narrowest habitat, and the least ecological information.

The population of these rare monkeys is estimated to be between 700 and 800 individuals. Currently, the center houses nine snub-nosed monkeys from Guizhou, according to data from the reserve’s administration.
