A common theory about Donald Trump’s appeal is that white teams feel like they are lagging behind while other groups are making progress. He pointed out that sentiment and spoke to the concerns of those constituents.

It turns out that those considerations are based on genuine economic changes, a new study by Harvard researchers shows. The researchers analyzed the census and tax records of 57 million young people to read about individuals’ abilities to move into the middle and upper categories (their mobility) over two recent generations. They found that things had gotten better among blacks and worse among poor whites, as this graph from my colleague Ashley Wu shows:
