Calls are being made to breathe new life into the old Mecca Bingo in Gloucester city centre. The vital Eastgate Street construction closed to the public in August 2022, but city leaders must find a new use for it.

The closure of the venue, which has been open for 46 years, has left the public wondering what is likely to be accommodated in this vast space. Plans for the site are yet to be submitted and Gloucester City Councilwoman Lorraine Campbell believes the city would gain advantages from a large-scale classic entertainment venue in the city centre.

She said that the former Mecca Bingo site could easily supply such an area and asked (March 21) if the council’s leaders would dedicate themselves to helping and supporting such a task in tactics other than financial ones. The head of the council, Richard Cook (C, Kingsway), agreed that the town would benefit greatly from a leisure venue of this magnitude.

“The city center would be the most suitable place for this. Leisure and culture play a role in regeneration, attracting new visitors and creating employment and opportunities for local people.

“The council would be willing to offer recommendations and encouragement to the owner of the former Mecca Bingo building to identify a suitable reuse of the property.

“The proposed advancement would be subject to obtaining permission to plan, and planning officials would be willing to offer recommendations in this regard. “
