BERLIN – The Berlin government says protesters will have to wear a face mask to slow the spread of the coronavirus after a protest in which thousands ignored social distancing regulations last weekend. The German news firm dpa reported that the Berlin state executive had agreed to make the mask mandatory for protests with more than 100 participants. There will be exceptions for car and bike rallies. Until now, the mask has not been mandatory at times outdoors unless the minimum distance of 1.5 meters between participants can be maintained. Police ordered the breakup of a giant demonstration on Saturday because the participants violated regulations. The protest opposed wearing a mask and other protective measures opposed to the pandemic. Participants most commonly wore masks in other protests in Berlin, adding a giant Black Lives Matter protest in June and a rally by pro-democracy activists from Hong Kong on Tuesday. ___ THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE VIRUS EPIDEMIC – 900,000 in Finland download the virus scan app – In the US Army academies, COVID-19 is the enemy to be defeated – The pandemic brings times Tough for farmers, worsening hunger – Hong Kong begins mass testing for the virus amid public doubts. ___ Follow the AP pandemic policy at http://apnews.com/VirusOutbreak and https://apnews.com/UnderstandingtheOutbreak ___ HERE’S WHAT HAPPENS: LISBON, Portugal – Portugal introduced its first Coronavirus touch-tracking app, called Stayaway Covid, after weeks of delays due to privacy considerations and amid the dubious good fortune of similar apps being rolled out across European governments.
