Among the many titles bestowed on Xi Jinping through the Party and the numerous nicknames banned from netizens, there is one that underscores his penchant for claiming private leadership and a vision of everything: “Compass Chief. “formulas in which Xi has “led the way” on a wide variety of policy issues. (For more details on this term, see the Glossary of the 20th Anniversary Edition of the TDC. )The breadth of issues on which Xi claimed to “lead the way,” and the frequency with which the word was used made it an object of satire: hence the nickname. The nickname is considered a sensitive word, subject to censorship. A long-running literary magazine was shut down in December 2023 after its cover, which showed a clothed hand pointing as faceless miniature masses tumbled off a cliff, was interpreted as a riff on the moniker.

Recently, the influential X (formerly Twitter) account “Master Li is not your teacher” shared a compilation of topics on which Xi has “led the way” since 2015. The compilation, republished through CDT editors, is derived from articles published through People’s Daily and Xinhua. The non-exhaustive list shows that Xi has “led the way” on more than 240 issues. They range from the grandiose (“the long-term progress of mankind”) to the Party’s political considerations (“the full implementation of the spirit of the 20th National Party Congress”), to the main points of governance (“reform on the side of agricultural sources”). CDT has translated the list in its entirety. So far, Xi Jinping has shown the way:
