According to a panel of geospatial analysts, the COVID-1nine pandemic is a watershed moment for geographic data formula (GIS) software and corporations and is likely to discriminate more times in the future.
“COVID-1nine forces you to re-prepare for the long term and GIS. COVID is a business case, and we will take geospatial studies and turn them into new business cases,” said Brian Smith, vice president of sales and delivery at GeoDecisions, a branch of Gannett Fleming.
Smith spoke on a panel for the Esri 2020 Virtual User Conference. Esri is a primary player in GIS analysis through its ArcGIS software. Esri was a leading software provider for companies and government agencies prior to COVID-1nine, but now geospatial mapping and studies are familiar to everyone.

El Dr. This Geraghty, Esri’s Medical Director, said location intelligence is evolving rapidly and that consumers are employing it for everything from crisis control and continuity to the chain of origin and employee tracking. “The pandemic is turning the way we give the concept a wonderful variety of things,” Geraghty said.
GIS data is increasingly playing a role in analyzing food insecurity, economic changes and the risks with reopening economies. Zach Robinson, GIS analyst for the City of Santa Monica, said his city began using GIS data in March when its emergency operations center activated.
Robinson stated that GIS knowledge has evolved to the max weekly, from birth to COVID-1 daily schedules and hospitalizations, and to the right to box models and follow-up staff. “Our use of GIS has promoted the position of location intelligence to our other organizations,” Robinson said.
Nikki Paripovich Stifle, GIS Manager at Kohler, said location knowledge is mandatory for the company’s global source chain to track restrictions, infections and has an effect on partners.
Ultimately, GIS knowledge will be used not only for COVID-1 waves, but also for all side effects in society, such as loss of food confidence and economic damage, said Dr. Dora Bara, Vice President of Community Health Investment, Providence St. Joseph Health.
