Recently, an incident in the Baltic Sea, in which a Chinese shipment allegedly cut those cables, exacerbated tensions between Sweden, Lithuania, Finland and Germany.
On November 17, the underwater internet cables connecting Sweden-Lithuania and Germany-Finland got damaged. According to Atlantic Council researcher Elisabeth Braw, the cables were dragged and severed by anchors on the seabed. This incident came to light within 24 hours, prompting countries to remain on high alert due to its severity.
According to the investigation, a Chinese cargo ship, Yi Peng-3, was present in the same area of the sea at the time of the incident. This ship had departed from Russia’s St. Petersburg and made a stop at a port located in Denmark’s exclusive economic zone.
Sweden and other countries pursued the ship and found its anchor damaged. Expert Elisabeth Braw stated that if the ship’s anchor gets entangled with an internet cable and drags it, the crew would be aware of it because it would significantly slow the ship’s speed.
The occurrence of two incidents in 24 hours has caused great concern. However, Sweden will have to discover that the sailors acted intentionally. If so determined, no criminal proceedings may be initiated against the ship’s crew or the company.
The cutting of Internet cables also has an impact on economic activities. Business transactions, online food shopping, and other economic operations are disrupted, which can result in significant monetary losses for countries. In addition, cutting submarine cables poses a risk to national security. Military and security agencies in many countries rely on such cables to communicate. A break in those cables can hinder communication between security agencies, increasing security risks.
