Donald Trump dials Xi Jinping ahead of inauguration, discusses TikTok and trade

The president elected by the United States, Donald Trump, spoke with his Chinese counterpart on Friday, before his imminent returns to the White House. The interaction came here even if the United States Supreme Court showed a law that prohibits Tiktok in the country.

“The call was a very good one for both China and the USA. It is my expectation that we will solve many problems together, and starting immediately. We discussed balancing trade, Fentanyl, TikTok, and many other subjects,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed hope for a “good start” to bond with Trump as the Republican leader returns after a four-year hiatus.

The US Supreme Court upheld a law that will ban TikTok in the United States on Friday — paving the way for a potential ban in two days. The popular video-sharing app is slated to lose approximately 170 million users unless its Chinese parent company sells the platform. The US Congress had passed a law to this effect in 2024 amid growing national security concerns.

Trump insisted on Friday, however, that the final resolution rested with him while the new potus.

“Although everything is going up to Mearray . . . so you’ll see what I’m going to do. Congress gave me the decision. So I’m going to make the decision,” he told CNN on Friday without giving details.

It is also applicable to keep in mind that the Tiktok CEO, Shou Zi Chew, is expected to attend the next inauguration rite for Donald Trump. According to a report by the New York Times, he was invited to sit in an honor position on the platform, an area reserved for former presidents, circle of members of relatives and other vital guests.

The outgoing Joe Biden administration appeared to agree with this assessment — noting that it was up to Trump to decide on enforcement of the ban.

“Given the timing, this management recognizes that moves to put the law into effect will have to fall to the next administration,” reads press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre after the Supreme Court’s verdict.

New national security adviser Mike Waltz also said Thursday that the Trump administration would put in place measures “to save Tiktok from switching to darkness. “

“The law allows an extension as long as a viable agreement is on the table. Essentially, he buys President Trump, the time to stay in Tiktok. At the same time, he needs the data,” he said.
