The Federal Aviation Administration has banned drone flights over parts of New York state, adding sections of New York, Long Island and Yonkers.

The regions feature “some of New York State’s most critical infrastructure sites,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

“This measure is purely preventive,” he said. There is no risk to those sites. “

The no-fly zones announced Thursday and Friday include parts of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, as well as a dozen Long Island communities, according to the FAA. The ban will last until January 18.

The FAA’s ruling follows Thursday’s announcement that the government had issued a similar month-long ban on drone flights in much of New Jersey, the first blanket ban since that government began investigating a series of sightings last month that sparked concern and speculation.

And in Connecticut, several Republican lawmakers have called for a ban on drones in their state. “What about Connecticut?  They asked in a written statement. “What about Connecticut’s critical infrastructure?”

New Jersey’s ban began Wednesday night and will continue through Jan. 17, according to an FAA alert report.
