Food composting returns to Alexandria farmers markets in August

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The last food waste composting service in Alexandria’s four agricultural markets. Food waste composting stations will reopen at Farmers Markets in Old Town and Del Ray on Saturday, August 1 and the Four Mile Run and West End markets on Sunday, August 2.

Like farmers’ markets, food waste stations will have coronavirus protocols. Residents are asked to wear a face mask and a distance of six feet from others. Shared pieces such as cloth towels, spoons and pens are never the best friends for guest use. The city has temporarily suspended the sale of kitchen compost cubes and the distribution of compost samples to markets. Visitors are encouraged to bathe their compost containers with soap and hot water after leaving them as a precaution.

Residents of the city of Alexandria can deposit their food waste free of charge. Food waste is transported to a compost and converted into compost. Accepted fabrics come with food and vegetable scraps, bread, pasta, rice, cereals, cereals, nuts, beans, cup beans, cup filters, tea bags, eggshells and flowers. Not accepted parts include meat, fish, crustaceans (and bones), dairy products, fats, oils, fats, animal waste, foam, plastic bags, packaging, films, lawn waste, elastics, fruit labels and diapers.

Since the 4th of July, farmers’ market positions have been allowed to provide food arrangements on the site, however, consumption of goods is never widely allowed at the site. Masks are mandatory for sellers and market position staff, and consumers are encouraged to wear the mask when entering market positions.
