Germany launches online portal for visa applications

Germany’s Foreign Ministry has introduced a new virtual platform for visa applications, with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock calling it “a real administrative revolution” in a press release.

The virtual portal, available here, aims to facilitate access to mandatory documents for those who wish to work, study or enroll in a family in Germany.

Applicants can choose from 28 categories of domestic visas online.

The new portal is available from January 1, 2025 for all 167 German visa offices worldwide.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock welcomed the new system, saying the reform “is long overdue. “

“Every year, Germany lacks at least 400,000 workers,” Baerbock said.

“At times like these, we can’t stop the most productive from coming here to roll up their sleeves because of the lengthy bureaucracy of paper applications and even longer wait times,” he added.

Baerbock stressed that Germany, as an immigration country, requires “a national visa process that is state-of the-art — modern, digital and secure.”
