Human Rights Media announces petition against Reddit.com to unfairly trample on freedom of expression and opinion

PORTLAND, Oregon, July 31, 2020 /PRNewswire/ – A Change.org petition has been created to ask for transparency and freedom of expression coverage on popular social media Reddit.com.

Reddit has made efforts to ban its online communities by banning hateful subreddits by nature. In June, about 2000 subtitles were removed, from the top popular as Trump’s support/r/The_Donald, to the pro-LGBT/r/RightwingLGBT community.

But a closer look at what they will prohibit shows significant inconsistencies and subjectivity in the way the company has implemented the rules. And with many communities banned without explanation, users who respect the rules are left in the dark. Will they be allowed to speak freely? Or will they be the next to be banned?

Prior to a recent replacement due to the network’s protest, an example of Reddit’s lack of clarity is its rule on the shield of minority teams. A user highlighted this rule in the message “Update our content policy”. He said that “the rule does not protect the computers of others who are the majority or inspire such hate attacks.” The user then asked, “So can we be racist with blacks in a predominantly black and racist country with whites in a predominantly white country?” This inconsistency is an undeniable example of how Reddit’s regulations and values were not an idea and were, at best, problematic.

If a sub-reddit faces a ban, Reddit proposes an appeal procedure to download more information. But in reality, these demands are not successful in the right people, and efforts to raise and raise these problems are ignored.

With Reddit enforcing its regulations so opaquely, it has moved away from the values of freedom of expression for a state of tyrannical law. This sets a harmful precedent for the long term of the: it is no longer a position where one can speak freely. On the contrary, he is governed by his indistinct regulations and through the ideologies and political tendencies of those responsible.

To protect the long-term Reddit.com, the request Change.org calls the site and its users to improve. To create an online network that is inclusive and welcoming, Reddit must demand transparency in all decisions related to the prohibition, suspension and deletion of content, and open communication without affecting users and moderators.
