J. D. Vance appeared to suggest that Democrats had “tried to kill” former President Donald Trump as he introduced him Wednesday at a rally in Asheboro, North Carolina.
After noting that Trump “gave up the simple life” to run for president, he continued: “They couldn’t beat him at the polls, so they tried to bankrupt him. They weren’t successful, so they tried to impeach him. They didn’t succeed, “Then they tried to put him in jail, and even tried to kill him. “
Vance appears to be referring to Trump’s legal problems, which have led to millions of dollars in fines and a conviction on 34 charges.
It’s unclear exactly what Vance meant by the last comment, however, on social media, some speculated it was a reference to Trump’s July 13 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania and an involvement in which Democrats were to blame. . The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, registered as a Republican. .
Before introducing Trump, the vice presidential nominee spoke to attendees about the Democratic National Convention, security, immigration, inflation and the drug crisis.
At his first outdoor rally since the assassination attempt, Trump talked about bulletproof glass, as did Vance, and basically discussed national security and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Trump had to prevent the rally when a member of the crowd called a doctor who needed medical attention, after which he left the podium and the bulletproof glass box he locked and discovered the user in the crowd alongside Secret Service agents.
The Secret Service later showed Newsweek that after the heat-related incident, the individual was ticketed and treated by paramedics.
This may not be the last time Trump uses bulletproof glass to protect himself in prolonged outdoor gatherings; the Secret Service reportedly presented it to Trump after his assassination attempt, even though that shield is reserved for sitting presidents.
This is the first time Vance has implied that Trump’s conflicting political parties tried to kill him; he made very similar comments at a rally in Atlanta, Georgia, on Aug. 3, Mother Jones reported.
“They couldn’t beat him politically, so they tried to bankrupt him. They were unsuccessful, so they tried to remove him. They were unsuccessful, so they tried to imprison him,” he quoted, adding, “They even tried to kill him. “
Recently, Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin alluded to threats made to Republican candidates in the last 2021 presidential election by Trump supporters.
In his speech at the Democratic National Convention, Raskin warned Vance about pre-life threats to former Vice President Mike Pence during the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, while saying the crowd chanted “Hang Mike Pence,” according to reports in the time.
Raskin said: “And by the way, JD Vance, do you understand why a spot suddenly opens up for a vice presidential candidate on the Republican Party ticket? They tried to kill his predecessor. They tried to kill him because he would not adhere to Trump’s plan to destroy and cancel the votes of millions of Americans. »
