Largest known Majiayao cultural settlement discovered in Gansu, China

LANZHOU, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) — Chinese archaeologists have discovered the largest known site of the Majiayao culture in Lintao county, northwest China’s Gansu Province, a joint archaeological team at the Siwa site said Tuesday.

The discovery at Siwa in Lintao marks the first discovery of a central agreement of the Majiayao culture in the last century, after seven years of excavation. The colonization covers a domain of more than 1 million square meters and spans several centuries, the team said.

Archaeologists have also uncovered many house sites, pits, kilns, and tombs, as well as possible roads, large areas of piled earth, and other remains.

The discovery reveals the design and significance of a gigantic arrangement dating back 5,000 years on the western Loess Plateau, highlighting the early social advances and civilizations of northwestern China, according to a team leader.
