A man in his 20s was taken to the hospital after being trapped in a collapsed trench Tuesday at an asset in Cedar Hills.

The incident occurred around 1:15 p. m. at the site of a structure where sewer lateral paintings are being carried out, according to a press release.

Authorities say the man, described as a personal contractor, was buried up to his chin in the trench about 10 feet deep, but remained vigilant for the rescue.

Crews used a combination of techniques to get the employee to safety, first installing what’s called a trench and then a vacuum truck to remove dirt and debris from the hole.

Three other staff members tried to rescue him before first responders arrived.

Tuesday’s incident comes as Utah County Special Response Teams prepare for rescue efforts like this through recent training.

First responders say they took into account protective measures for their rescue teams, as well as the trauma the victim faced, such as breathing difficulties due to being trapped under heavy soil and the effect of being crushed through concrete.

Authorities did not say how long the man was trapped. Once released, he was airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is assisting in the investigation of the cause of the trench collapse.
