Newt, an orange tabby cat known for roaming MCT trails, died in late May. A week after his death, cyclists and walkers created a memorial at the site of “Newt” the Trail Critter, an orange cat sculpture named after Newt. and Edwardsville Junction.
“A network is so much more than just its people,” S. J. said. Said. Morrison, executive director of MCT. ” Animals can also be creators of culture, and Newt, in fact, one of the creators of culture. “
Morrison explained that Newt’s sculpture was almost completely covered in photographs, flowers, notes and other memorabilia. MCT got rid of all the monuments on Friday, June 7, 2024, and gifted them to Newt’s family.
Chris and Lisa Wells, Newt’s owners, were defeated during the process they received. Chris noted that Newt belongs to the network and Wells’ circle of relatives is pleased to have been able to share it with all MCT trail users.
“He’s essentially the cat in the net,” Chris said. “A lot of other people have fallen in love with him over the years. “
Newt would approach cyclists and walkers on the trails. He sought to be petted and rarely lay down in the middle of the path until he attracted attention. Over the years, he has attracted so much attention that the Madison County Trail Association has created products in his image. Proceeds from the products went to the Metro East Humane Society, where Newt was adopted.
Morrison said Newt had created a “destination” for many trail users who would seek out Newt on their walking and biking tours. A “Newt for the Mayor” Facebook page allowed others to detail their reports with Newt and post photographs of the cat. Many other people had a deep connection with him and enjoyed interacting with him on the trails.
“He was kind of a goodwill ambassador for MCT Trails because he was so friendly with everyone he met,” Morrison added. “Every time my circle of family and I met Newt, the experience was joyful. So, from a general point of view, it’s a major loss for MCT Trails and for all the other people who enjoyed it. He will be missed.
But as the monument demonstrates, Newt will not be forgotten. Morrison thanked the network of people who came out to show their support for Newt, his family, and MCT Trails.
“It means a lot to us, both to Madison County Transit and to the other people who enjoyed it,” Morrison said. “It’s pretty unique when a cat has such a big impact. “
