The caves used by indigenous peoples for 40,000 years and ancient artifacts were destroyed by miners in a state-approved blasting operation.

Aboriginal owners said the loss of the valuable Juukan Gorge caves in Western Australia, the first known sites occupied by their people, was a devastating blow.

Rio Tinto, the Anglo-Australian mining giant, said the explosions were in line with approvals granted by the Western Australian government seven years ago. The combined apple stated that it had worked “constructively” with the local population and, where possible, had replaced its operations.

The caves, about 30 miles from Tom Price Mountain in West Pilbara, are the only indoor site in Australia that shows the continuation of the race during the last ice age.
