Morrisons opens the United Kingdom’s largest fish freezing centre in Falfish, Cornwall

Morrisons food supplier Myton Food Group has opened the UK’s largest fish freezer at Cornish fishing company Falfish.

The £12. 8 million Falfish Freezing Centre includes a freezing tunnel capable of freezing 112,000 fish per hour and up to 180 tonnes of sardines and other fish per day.

It also has a state-of-the-art hot fuel defrosting formula and a green refrigerant with 0 global warming potential that Morrisons says will enable it to reach its goal of net zero operating emissions by 2035.

Plans for the site began in 2021, when Morrisons acquired its long-term supplier, Falfish.

The opening of the new one represents the largest investment made on the Cornish coast in a generation, with DEFRA offering £3. 8 million in investment through its UK Seafood Infrastructure Fund.

Morrisons prepares and manufactures more than a proportion of all new products sold in its stores. Myton Food Group is the supermarket’s wholesale production arm.

Andrew Thornber, managing director of Myton Food Group, said: “More than 80% of the seafood sold in Morrisons outlets comes from our seafood operations in Cornwall, where we buy from local fishermen.

“The opening of the UK’s largest fish freezing center only strengthens our position as one of the UK’s largest food manufacturers, but also particularly expands our seafood export business.

“We are excited about this cutting-edge task since the acquisition of Falfish in 2021, which is making a very positive difference to the local industry and network and offering long-term sustainable as well as the most up-to-date fish for Morrisons store customers.
