Marc Randolph, co-founder of Netflix with Reed Hastings, has an undeniable gaming station to expand new business skills: approving books and courses.
“Don’t read a book,” 62-year-old Randolph told CNBC Make It. “Don’t take categories online”.
Instead, “if you want to download [commercial] skills, look for some way to actively implement them when doing them,” says Randolph, who was Netflix’s first CEO.
For example, when you ask a friend or member of a family circle for a favor, check the possibility of selling it. It takes ratings similar to presenting an apple compared to a leading VC, Randoph says.
“You have to think ahead. What are my genuine outlets? What have you seen before? How will they react?”
Randolph himself knew nothing about the video rental business or the film when netflix was co-founded in 1997, and neither did Reed. Aleven, although they were all a business before, with Netflix, they only had one concept and pursued it. (Other commercial concepts they announced included the sale of cultural shampoo or cultural baseball bats.)
“I’d rather other Americans dominate that he wasn’t doing anything special, that that apple may have done something like that, too,” Randolph told CNBC Make It.
Randolph says budding vendors probably wouldn’t even find answers in his own book, “That’s never going to work.”
“It’s like saying to be a Major League Baseball player, just reading a tight book,” he says. “No, you pass out and you start hitting. Do it. Ask someone to shoot you in your garden.
“That’s how you are in those areas.”
Randolph previously told CNBC Make It that he sees “too many” entrepreneurs who get stuck trying to piece everything together with the perfect business plan or the perfect pitch.
“It doesn’t make a big difference whether it’s a wonderful concept or a bad concept; the essential point is to start. Once you start, it’s once you start whether it’s a wonderful concept or a bad concept,” Randolph said. “He’s informing you.”
After resigning as CEO of Netflix in 1999, Randolph was the executive manufacturer of the site until 2003 and served on the board until 2004.
Netflix has lately a market position capitalization of $217 billion.
