When the Washington Capitals purchased and took over CapFriendly’s hockey roster and salary database, statistics guru Tim Hiebert found himself out of a job.

CapFriendly is a go-to source not only for hockey fans, but also for sleuths close to and even on the fringes of sports coverage. Like Hockey Reference, it’s an approved tool for us sleuths who work for the Associated Press.

CapFriendly is now wholly owned by an NHL team. But Hiebert, who compared CapFriendly’s intensity charts for six years, has become editor of The Hockey News’ new Lineups section.   This is a new site for projected NHL rosters, intensity charts, and roster news and analysis.

For now, some things eyebrows.

De facto captain Nick Foligno has been sent back to the Blackhawks’ fourth line to start, despite his stability, replacement after replacement and strength on the boards, confused and useless peripheral forward Lukas Reichel is at third.

Chances are, this won’t be the case once the record launches in October. Well, this will be a work in progress.

The overall site, which includes all 32 NHL teams, can be found at https://thehockeynews. com/lineups/

This is what Hiebert hopes to achieve.

The long-term goal is to create something easier to use, so keep an eye out for more physically powerful capabilities in the future. Data loading can be a bit slow, but it thinks it looks pretty smart in this format. It tried to mimic CapFriendly’s design with a few tweaks, so it deserves to be familiar to those who visited the older pages.

It also partnered with evolving-hockey. com to integrate complex hockey statistics into intensity dashboards. You will now find CF% (Corsi For), iGx (Expected Individual Goals) and GSAx (Goals Scored Above Expectations). For an explanation of those statistics and all complex statistics in general, he recommends reading the Evolving Hockey Glossary.
