NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Art Gallery will release its fifth virtual archive, Inventing Downthe town: Artist-Run Galleries in New York City, 1952-1965, as a component of its TRACE series: Archives and Meetings, July 28. The TRACE event, co-organized with the NYU Grey Art Gallery, Inventing Downthe City Curator Melissa Rachleff, meets NYU Grey Art Gallery Director Lynn Gumpert and NYUAD Art Gallery Executive Director Allison Maya. Starting with the historical exhibition Inventing Downthe town as a birth point, speakers will explore the history of New York’s famous downthe town art scene and discover how art scenes form today, even at a time of physical separation.
Organized through NYU’s Grey Art Gallery, Melissa Rachleff’s Inventing Downthe town exhibition visited the NYUAD Art Gallery in October 2017. His studies and the resulting catalogue for this exhibition marked a turning point in the certainty of New York art history. He examined the era between the h8 of summary expressionism in New York in the early 1950s and Dad’s art and minimalism in the early 1960s.
It is the first exhibition of the primary museum to directly review those critical years from the point of view of four galleries of key artists. This live webinar will take place on July 28 at 8 p.m. via Zoom. Tracking: Inventing Downthe town marks the launch of the virtual exhibition file. The online archive will provide virtual versions of the youth guide, the exhibition brochure and the photo archive.

The exhibition featured more than two hundred works through more than 50 artists, adding Yayoi Kusama, Alex Katz, Mark di Suvero, Claes Oldenburg, Yoko Ono, Ed Clark, Emilio Cruz, Lois Dodd, Rosalyn Drexler, the greatest friend Hazelet Drummond, Jean Follett, Lester Johnson, Boris Lurie, Jan Muller and Aldo Tambellini, presenting the diversity of the artistic scene of the time. Archives from beyond virtual exhibitions must be held to the public in TRACE: Archives and Réunion.

Meanwhile, the NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery (NYUAD) announced its fourth virtual archive, Permanent Temporaryity, as a component of TRACE: Archives and Meetings on July 7. The series of 10 virtual parties and archival publications allows the audience to a friend virtuously explore the beyond OF NYUAD Art Gallery Exhibitions, either one or two weeks in the summer. To mark any of the releases, NYUAD Art Gallery organizes a special assembly with the artists. For this assembly, artists Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti met with curators Salwa Mikdadi, Bana Kattan and NYUAD Art Gallery executive director Maya Allis to return to the exhibition of its origins in its staging at the NYUAD Art Gallery in 2018, at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven in 2019. The panel explored how context changes the meaning and relevance of the exhibition, as well as its intent and message.
