Oklahoma County commissioners are expected to hold a meeting Monday to determine whether to move forward with the acquisition of the proposed prison site near Del City.
However, the takeover plans don’t come with the structure of a criminal – at least for now.
An amendment to those plans would allow the acquisition of the East Grand Boulevard land to move forward, but only for the construction of a behavioral fitness center.
Time is running out to spend $50 million from the federal COVID-19 relief budget for the gym.
All this while the long-term financing and structuring projects of the criminal component remain on hold.
Last month, the Oklahoma City Council voted 7-1, denying a special permit to build a prison on the property. However, commissioners say nothing is stopping them from painting at the intellectual fitness center.
“If we have the opportunity to go ahead and build an intellectual fitness center, the $50 million is clearly at stake. And I’m moving forward,” Oklahoma County Commissioner Brian Maughan said.
“One of the reasons we have intellectual aptitude problems is that we didn’t have the ability; when they built the jail, they didn’t have the option to house patients with intellectual illnesses inside the jail,” said Oklahoma County Commissioner Myles Davidson.
This assembly is scheduled for Monday at nine in the morning.
