Recently, the United States imposed several sanctions on China for violations of Houguy rights opposed to Uighurs and for interfering with Hong Kong’s autonomy, a sentiment the British government is now feeling.
Relations between the UK and China have been strained by the recent adoption of new security legislation in Hong Kong, which has greatly expanded China’s success in the formerly semi-autonomous territory. Pompeo’s journey came hours after the UK’s direct decision to suspend its exculturation treaty with Hong Kong.
“The UK’s misguided comments and movements on Hong Kong are a serious violation of foreign law and the basic rules governing foreign relations,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Tuesday at a press conference in Washington, D.C.
“Hong Kong’s business is China’s internal affairs permit for foreign interference.”

The UK foreign minister said Sunday that the verdict for implementing sanctions is not a “wisely wrong” decision, the Finical Times reported.
“We see either country that perceives freedom and democracy (…) we perceive this threat that the Chinese Communist Party poses to them,” Pompeo said Tuesday.
