A 3. 4 million-square-foot project has been proposed that will add a hotel, entertainment facilities, department store and businesses to the site where the Richmond Night Market is currently located.
It’s one of the biggest breakthroughs coming under attention in Richmond lately.
The night market recently obtained permission from the city council to continue operating on the land for 3 years.
Kevin McKinney of Jingon International Development, the applicant, said he has developed a plan with the night market related to long-term operations at the 20-acre site.
“So as the phase progresses, the night market will be able to be housed on the ground,” McKinney said.
“Our vision in the end is that the night market will continue to be a component of the animation of the place,” he added.
The land is currently zoned for advertising purposes, and the applicant has applied to the City Council to rezone it for high-rise advertising and institutional use on the riverbank as well as for “school and institutional use. “
It was unanimously approved by the City Council on Monday in the first reading of the rezoning bylaw. It will then be presented for a public hearing on May 21.
The position will be taken in 3 phases.
The city will receive $15 million in contributions for a “Recreation Facilities Reserve Fund” and approximately seven acres for public spaces and levees.
The developer will build a 30,000-square-foot arts and cultural facility and an 11,000-square-foot network protection building. The latter will belong to the city.
Other publicly available spaces include a 1. 6-acre riverside “balcony” and 3 acres of open space.
McKinney noted that the developer had a hotel interested in the transfer of the first phase, which will be announced soon.
“There’s a lot of market to make this task a reality,” McKinney said.
He added that they hope the allocation will be approved until next year.
