Putin approves new governor of restless Russian region hit through protests

MOSCOW – President Vladimir Putin on Monday appointed a new interim governor to head the Jabarovsk region on Russia’s far east after the former regional leader arrested for murder beyond this month, sparking a wave of protests.

At least another 10,000 Americans demonstrated in Khabarovsk on Saturday to call for the release of Moscow, Sergei Furgal, a member of the Liberal Democratic Ultranationalist Party (LDPR), which won the election in 2018 after defining a rival of the ruling pro-Putin party.

On Monday, Putin’s official friend got rid of Furgal from the workplace and appointed Mikhail Degtyaryov, another LDPR member, as the region’s interim leader, according to a decree published on the Kremlin’s website.
