Vladimir Putin’s military is gaining ground in Ukraine, hit by heavy casualties and officer shortages, British defence chiefs say.
They also warned that Russian forces will most likely acquire more territory in the coming weeks.
In its latest intelligence update, the Ministry of Defence in London said: “In July 2024, Russian forces (FGR) carried out non-stop attacks in the centre of Donetsk province.
“The FGR is advancing westward, taking control of several villages and approaching the logistics center of Pokrovsk.
“The RGF has also advanced northwards in Niu York City, which has been on the front line since 2014. The city is almost in dispute between the RGF and the Armed Forces of Ukraine. “
The report added: “Russia will most likely continue to make tactical advances in the coming weeks.
“However, its overall operational capability remains constrained by several factors, in addition to a high attrition rate, limited training, and officer shortages. “
Putin may seize more territory, but at the cost of hundreds of thousands of Russian soldiers killed or wounded in his attack on four regions of eastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces are suffering heavy losses, with tens of thousands of civilians killed and wounded in the war introduced by Putin in February 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that he had visited the Vovchansk frontline domain in the northeastern region of Kharkiv, near the border with Russia, where Moscow’s forces are seeking to break through.
Russian troops opened a new front in the region’s north in May, temporarily conducting raids of up to six miles.
The Ukrainian army then stopped the offensive, one of whose main axes was heading towards the city of Vovchansk.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in recent days that it had taken two villages located about 32 kilometers northwest of Avdiivka, the Donetsk town that the Russian army seized in February after a long war.
This victory is the Kremlin’s latest wonderful triumph in this war that is now in its third year.
Russia’s offensive, fueled by its abundant merit in foot soldiers and weapons, has continually forced the Ukrainians to withdraw from their defensive positions to capture or kill.
At the same time, the Russian Navy has begun planned exercises involving the maximum of its fleet in the Arctic and Pacific oceans, as well as the Baltic and Caspian seas, the Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday.
The Russian exercises, involving 20,000 soldiers and three hundred ships, will test the readiness and functions of the navy at all levels, the ministry said.
British defense chiefs say more than 20 Russian ships have been hit by Ukrainian attacks, forcing the Black Sea Fleet to withdraw from annexed Crimea.
