According to the New York Times, President Donald Trump has called on the UK ambassador to influence British government officials to “help” the Open with its Trump Turnberry complex.

According to the report, Ambassador Woody Johnson, who also owns the NFL’s New York Jets, “felt compelled” in early 2018 to secure the shipment of older primary champions at the Trump Resort in Scotland. He thanked David Mundell, the Secretary of State of Scotland, directly, although a statement from the UK government explained that Johnson “did not ask Mr. Mundell about the British Open or another major sporting event.”

Johnson’s deputy, Lewis Lukens, said the request could be “an unethical use of the presidency for non-public purposes.” The constitution’s emoluments clause prevents federal officials from accepting gifts. “A possible violation,” the government’s ethics expert told The Times, is that “british or Scottish governments would have to pay the maximum for the tournament’s security, an occasion that would make a profit for Trump.”

Decisions at The Host Sites of the Open are made through the RA and not through the UK or the Scottish government. Turnberry has hosted the Open only once since 1995, in 2009, when Stewart Cink beat Tom Watson in a memorable playoff series. Each of the other nine open rotation courses took the design once between 2011-19.

“We haven’t won a great apple technique from the UK government or the Scottish government on this,” R-A spokesman Mike Woodcock said.

Before COVID’s Nine pandemic caused the cancellation of this year’s Open, long-term host sites were shown for 2022 (Royal Liverpool) and 2023 (Royal Troon). Now, Royal St. George’s will host in 2021 and St. Andrews in 2022, while projects beyond do not appear as shown. But there has not been an explicit resolution on the return pass to Turnberry despite the prolonged absence of the course as host. The course also held the Open at 1nine77, 1nine86 and 1ninenine4.

“We have 10 courses in which we organize the Open Championship, of which Turnberry is one of them,” said Martin Slumbers, managing director of R-A, in 2019.

Trump got the Ayrsrent compound in 201 four and renamed it Trump Turnberry shortly thereafter. She ran as a presidential candidate when the course organized the British Women’s Open in 2015.
