Hackers have breached more than 1,800 Roblox accounts and demoted user profiles with messages from Donald Trump’s re-election campaign.
Users with accounts in the Roblox multiplayer game said the registration pages on the website Roblox.com for subscribers and people who followed were downgraded over the weekend with a message that read “Ask your parents to vote for Trump this year! MAGA2020 “.
The first intrusions appear to have started last week, according to messages shared on the Fan forums of Reddit, Twitter and Roblox.
In addition to Trump’s text message, pirated account avatars have also been replaced to wear clothing commonly used through Donald Trump’s typical ER, such as a red cap and a T-blouse with an American flag and a bald eagle.
Users whose accounts were hacked and revealed the incident on The Roblox forums admitted to changing passwords on multiple online accounts or easily guessable credentials.
Mabig Apple also admitted to activating a feature called two-step verification (2SV).
Roblox uses an email-based 2SV system that requires users to enter a valid username and password, and then a one-time short-lived code that it sends to the user’s email inbox.
You never know very recently how hackers breached accounts. Roblox did not return Apple comment requests to ZDNet or other news publications.
However, with the help of the KE-LA threat intelligence corporation, ZDNet is able to identify several network pages containing giant lists of Roblox clear text usernames and passwords.
ZDNet tested dozens of Roblox usernames on those lists and discovered that a large apple of them was among those hacked through pro-Trump messages.
At this point, ZDNet could conclude that the maximum of pro-Trump hackers that was probably used long ago compromised the Roblox account lists shared online. They then had access to accounts where 2SV was not activated and downgraded profiles with a similar message in favor of Trump, the maximum likely component of a chain of automated transactions.
When ZDNet started reviewing those hacked profiles this weekend, there were about 750 pirated accounts. The number froze the week to approximately 1000 accounts, however, dazzling new accounts began to appear today.
When this bulletin was written, the diversity of degraded accounts increased from 1,680 to 1,820 in an hour.
Roblox users who use a weak password are encouraged to move it and activate 2SV. As Roblox can also advertise to young teens, parents are also encouraged to lead and help their teens reposition themselves and determine a strong password and activate 2SV.
