On July 1, much of the food protection that had been the responsibility of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control was transferred to the South Carolina Department of Agriculture.

The Department of Agriculture’s new Department of Retail Food Safety regulates food place kitchens, delis, catering services, school cafeterias, some retail convenience establishments and some other institutions that prepare food for on-site consumption, according to a CSAE news release.

The agency’s milk protection program regulates liquid milk and category “A” dairy products, such as yogurt. The SCDA’s Laboratory Services Department has taken over the Milk Laboratory and will be liable for the liquid milk samples and some dairy products.

Companies that were regulated through DHEC’s former Manufactured Food program (adding ice, soft drinks, bottled water, frozen desserts, butter, and cheese) are now regulated through the SCDA’s existing food protection program, which oversees food production at the wholesale level. .

These systems are part of the SCDA’s Consumer Protection Division, which regulates many agricultural, food, and consumer-related facilities in South Carolina, adding weights and measuring devices (adding fuel pumps and grocery scales), puppy and puppy food, seeds, and produce. cultivation, the one declared.

Consumers will soon see new SCDA-branded stickers on the windows of retail food establishments. The public can access the SC Food Grades formula through the SCDA online page or by using the QR code on the label to read inspection reports and view alphabetical notes on foods. retail establishments, he said.

Although retail food protection managers will be founded in the regions where they work, all administration has been centralized on the SCDA’s State Farmers Market campus. DHEC regional offices will no longer pay bills or provide retail food protection services.
