Unmanned Vehicle Technologies, LLC (UVT) and uAvionix announced that UVT has been granted an exemption from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) beyond line of sight (BVLOS) at its Michigan control site. The waiver, known as 107W-2024-01230 and issued under Part 107 regulations, UVT to perform BVLOS operations without the need for visual observers (VOs). This opens up new possibilities for remote business applications.
The approval of the exemption is largely attributed to the integration of uAvionix Casia G’s land-based stumbling onion and avoidance (DAA) formula. This complex formula is designed to trip and avoid other aircraft, ensuring safe and reliable BVLOS operations. Notably, the Casia G formula has also been used in the Oswego City Police Department’s Drone as a First Responder (DFR) program.
“We are thrilled to have obtained this exemption from the FAA, which validates our commitment to protection and innovation in the UAS industry,” said Matthew Rybar, vice president of remote operations at UVT. “uAvionix’s Casia G formula is a game-changer, allowing us to expand our operational functions and explore new programs for our technology. “
The UVT exemption is indicative of a developing trend within the UAS industry, where advertising entities and public protection agencies are obtaining exemptions from BVLOS. Advanced DAA technologies like Casia G play an important role in ensuring the protection and power of those operations.
“Our generation’s good fortune in obtaining BVLOS waivers for UVT and the Oswego Police Department is a testament to their reliability and efficiency,” commented Jon Damush, CEO of uAvionix. leveraging Casia G’s capabilities for its UAS operations. “
With the ability to perform BVLOS operations, UVT is in a position to explore various applications, adding infrastructure inspection, agricultural monitoring, and emergency response. The Michigan verification site will serve as a verification floor for those applications, demonstrating the potential of BVLOS operations for industry reshaping and operational efficiency.
To ensure safety, the FAA waiver includes provisions such as maintaining a maximum altitude of 240 feet above ground level, employing geofencing to confine operational areas, and employing pre-planned routes for automated flights. Additionally, the Casia G formula will be operational in all BVLOS operations, offering real-time airspace awareness to the pilot in command (PIC).
