VA Leverages Electronic Fitness Data Formula for Studies to Aid Clinical Care

The Department of Veterans Affairs has partnered with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to identify an online knowledge sharing page that uses VA electronic fitness records to drive studies that can improve clinical care.

The platform, called Centralized Interactive Phenomic Resource, or CIPHER, may allow for a broader sharing of study findings within the clinical community, the VA said.

The online public resource, open to VA and non-VA researchers, provides insights drawn from the department’s built-in fitness system, the largest in the United States.

Researchers can leverage the CIPHER library to download computable entries derived from complex fitness knowledge, such as disease phenotypes and clinical conditions. The library generates knowledge through ORNL’s computer conveniences and expertise.

According to Sumitra Muralidhar, director of the VA Million Veteran Program (CIPHER’s main sponsor), the platform has “revolutionized” the way researchers use EHR knowledge with its standardized and optimized technique that allows them to get started in fitness research.

The VA has already made efforts to modernize the EHR, with the involvement of the personal sector, to tailor the aptitude results of members of the military service branches.
