The Chicks spoke about their recent resolution to replace their call for “The Dixie Chicks” after decades of nickname.
The organization announced last month that it had taken the resolution to change The Chicks’ name in light of recent protests opposed to police brutality and racial inequality, as well as the continued national verbal exchange on Confederate symbols. The word “Dixie” is connected to the Confederacy.
Speaking to the New York Times about their new album, Gaslighter, band members Natalie Maines, Martie Erwin Maguire and Emily Strayer explained their resolve to “Dixie” by name.

“We were literally teenagers when we used this stupid name,” Maguire said.
They explained that the band’s call was a sophisticated reference to Little Feat’s dixie Chicken song. However, until 2003, they had already acquired the call that was now synonymous with their success.
“We’re looking to replace it years, years and years ago,” Maines added. “I was just trying to separate myself from the other people waving Dixie’s flag.”
Their good fortune and the pitfalls they feared would result from such a large logo replacement effort prevented them from acting for years. However, a recent incident gave them a new perspective. Stayer says he ran into a Confederate flag on Instagram titled “The Dixie Swastika.” She said the symbol made her think, “I don’t need anything to do with it.”
