The Chinese government is urging Western corporations to forget about American warnings of the disadvantages of economic investment under the regime, while Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denounces Beijing’s competitive economic and security policies.
“You have directly chosen to join China to seek development,” Chinese Secretary General Xi Jinping wrote to the Global CEO Council in a thursday letter published in the state media.
Xi pledged to “provide an easier trading environment for Chinese and foreign companies,” an opening that comes a few days after President Trump implied that Beijing’s poor control of the coronavirus pandemic had undermined negotiations for the U.S.-China industrial war. Meanwhile, Pompeo has intensified its attacks on Chinese-generation companies, identifying the giants of telecommunications and social media as threats to privacy and national security.
“We have witnessed unilateral aggression,” Pompeo told the New York Economic Club on Thursday, according to Xi’s decades of U.S. openings in China. “In this call, other Americans at Mabig were robbed of their high-value assets, American staff of average elegance lost their jobs… wisely through U.S. corporations to create genuine charges destroyed by the Chinese theft.”
Such political conflicts have raised the option of a “decoupling” of economies and China, a problematic prospect for the masses of business given the length of any of the economies. However, the coronavirus pandemic has sparked interest among Western politicians and business leaders to pull china’s chains of origin.
Xi advised business leaders to “maintain the concept of mutual benefit and the joint progression of communications and cooperation with Chinese companies.” Pompeo rejects such calls, saying beijing is using rhetoric to mask its injustice and dishonesty.
“We prefer that you respect the rule of law,” Pompeo told the Economic Club. “What we are asking of China and the Chinese Communist Party is never very difficult, but it is something Secretary-General Xi has shown he is unwilling to do.”
