Xi mourns the leader of the Communist Party of Viet Nam at the embassy (Xinhua)

BEIJING (Reuters) – Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the Viet Nam embassy on Saturday to mourn the death of Communist Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong, official news firm Xinhua reported on Saturday.

Trong died on Friday after thirteen years in Viet Nam’s toughest position, overseeing immediate economic growth, a years-long anti-corruption campaign and a pragmatic foreign policy.

Trong hosted Xi and US President Joe Biden in Hanoi last year, strengthening relations with the two countries despite rising tensions between the US and China.
